From Alan Bock:
Here’s a little essay from reader Jerry Silkebakkan that I think is worthy of consideration and thought:
“Approximately 12,000 to 15,000 years ago, the last ice age our planet has
been in came to an end. The factors that put us into the ice age slowly
slowly began to undo themselves, and our planet slowly started to warm up.
The three hundred-foot thick ice sheets that covered North America and
Europe began to melt away as the axis tilt of our planet slowly leaned more
toward the sun. At that time the tilt was 21.4 degrees, it is now 23.5
degrees and 9,000 years from now the tilt will be 24.5 degrees.
The changing tilt is only one of the factors of the “Milankovitch Cycles”
affecting the climate on Earth. The other two are fully explained on the
internet.
When our planet goes into an Ice Age, we (our planet) become colder. When we
come out of an Ice Age, we get warmer. We are in the process of exiting the
last one, so our planet should get warmer, and we are. The activities of
mankind are too small to have any effect on global climate, in comparison to
the power of our sun.
This is about as simple as I can explain it. According to the deep ice cores
taken in Antarctica, during the last 750,000 years our planet has been
through seven ice ages. In about 96,000 years there will be another ice age.
For the next 9,000 years it is going to get a little warmer and then the
Earth’s tilt will start to move back toward the 21.4 degree position and
Earth will get cooler.
Our government is in the process of installing many new very expensive
regulations to control global warming. None of them will do anything but
take billions of dollars out of our economy. For nothing in return.”
