Given the dismal electoral situation for Republicans, it’s no surprise that Debbie Cook’s campaign for the 46th congressional seat held by Dana Rohrabacher got a little boost. It’s still a longshot for Cook, but here’s a statement her campaign just sent out:
“The Cook Political Report, an independent non-partisan publication that analyzes political campaigns across the country, today upgraded the 46th Congressional District from a ’solid Republican’ to a ‘likely Republican’ district, providing a major shot in the arm to Democratic nominee Debbie Cook’s candidacy.“The upgrade represents the only movement in solid Republican districts on the West Coast. Notably, it’s the first Orange County congressional race to be considered competitive since Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez’s 1996 race against incumbent Bob Dornan. Movement in the Cook Political Report (no relation to the candidate) is considered significant, because it is closely watched by political insiders, the media and the national political parties.
“‘There is already a lot of excitement about this race among the people who live in the district and this new rating will add to the energy and enthusiasm surrounding our campaign,’ Shaw said. ‘Debbie is a fiscal conservative who has bipartisan appeal. She is a strong advocate of clean air and clean water. Those values resonate with the middle class voters of this coastal district.’
California’s 46th was one of only 30 races to be upgraded in solid Republican districts across the country. The Cook Report noted that ‘the poor national climate for the GOP and the DCCC’s (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee) unprecedented financial edge makes even very difficult districts for Democrats worth keeping tabs on.’
“The Swing State Project, a national blog that tracks campaigns, has listed California’s 46th District as a race to watch since April.
“Cook is a two-term member of the Huntington Beach City Council, currently serving as mayor. She has devoted much of her adult life and her legal career to environmental protection and energy policy. She considers reducing America’s dependence on fossil fuels an environmental and national security imperative.
“The 46th Congressional District covers a two-county area bounded by Costa Mesa on the south and the Palos Verdes Peninsula on the north.”

Unfortunately the 46th district voters vote more for party than they do for the people running. Debbie Cook is a strong candidate running against a do less than nothing Dana Rohrabacher. The change to “likely republican” simply means Rohrbacher will win the race 60% to 40% instead of the usual 68% to 32%. It is time for people to truly look at how our representatives represent us. If they did, they would dump the career politician who has very little to show for his many years on the public dole.
If any reporters at the Register ever did any research, instead of just being stenographers for Rohrabacher, they would see that Diane Feinstein carried the 46th district in 2006 and Barbara Boxer only lost by 9,000 votes in 2004.
And the district gets less Republican every day as people can’t even remember why anyone thought Ollie North was some kind of hero, or why Rohrabacher is anything beyond a bombastic clown.
Maybe a lot of these so-called Republicans think aren’t so loyal after all, especially if anyone ever reports on Rohrabacher’s long and wacky history.
Look what OC Republicans supported these last eight years: George W. Bush and Mike Carona. Both horrible picks. Same applies to Dana Rohrabacher. He has zero to show for all the money we have invested in him. He needs to ride into the sunset with Bush and Carona. Time for a change!
Don’t forget about the damage done by Cheney, Rumsfield and Rowe.
Need we say more? Dump Dana and his buddies!

The National Taxpayers Union awarded Rohrabacher their National Taxpayers Friend Award for his voting record in 2007.
I’ll take a “do less than nothing” “bombastic clown” like that any day (especially over Cook whose solution to rising oil prices is to “do less than nothing”).
I take one look at how the quality of life in Huntington Beach has deteriorated under Cooks leadership & I sure as hell don’t want her in national office. Her policies will lead us to $10 a gallon gas. She offers nothing new or innovative. The OC register can play her up all they want but she doesn’t have a chance of getting elected.
Chip…
First, I live in Huntington Beach, and I hadn’t noticed that my quality of life was deteriorating.
Second, even if the quality of life here IS deteriorating, shouldn’t the 5 conservatives on the city council get the blame, instead of the 2 liberals?
