When we pointed out legislators’ plan to borrow money intended for transportation and local government in order to plug that massive hole in the state budget, some folks complained. Democrat folks.
“We wouldn’t do such a thing!” essentially was the response from Sacramento Democrats, claiming: “It’s the Republicans who are behind that.”
It’s true enough that Republicans earlier suggested one way to fill the budget hole would be to borrow from funds set aside for gas sales taxes and mental health services, for example.
Democrats wouldn’t do that, insisted a spokeswoman for Senate Pro Tem Don Perata.
Well, maybe Democrats didn’t have in mind to borrow that money intended for other uses, but there’s always other money intended for other uses the Democrats already have identified to borrow from.
In fact, there are 43 - that’s FORTY THREE - special funds that the Democrat-controlled budget conference committee already has decided to borrow from because, well, because they can.
After all, those funds - which are intended to pay for things like hospital, school and transportation purposes - have surpluses. And as we know, Democrats have never seen a surplus they weren’t eager to spend into a deficit.
So, whether the Dems intended to raid, er, borrow, $2 billion plus from those same funds the Republicans were considering, they’re certainly primed to borrow a half a billion dollars from 43 other funds.
Doncha just love Sacramento sanctimony?
