Sarah Palin smoked marijuana — and inhaled

August 29th, 2008, 4:10 pm · 33 Comments · posted by by Alan Bock, Register editorial writer

Everybody’s tracking things down. The estimable Marijuana Policy Project has tracked down the fact that Sarah Palin has publicly acknowledged that she smoked marijuana and inhaled – but she says she didn’t like it. Of course possession and use was legal in Alaska for some time, though it was still against federal law. Now she says she’s not for legalization. “Wrong message to kids,” the lamest possible reason.

MPP makes the obvious point:

“Governor Palin is one of many millions of Americans who have used marijuana and gone on to live productive, wildly successful lives,” said Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C. “That she used marijuana is no big deal, but what is a big deal is that she thinks that the 100 million Americans who have used marijuana, including herself, belong in jail. That wouldn’t be good for her kids.”

She is still a “stunning choice”. I think that we can overlook some youthful indiscretions and her stance on non legalization of marijuana make some sense to me . At least she didn’t take some of the more powerful mind altering drugs that Obama probably had taken in his Hawaiin youth.

  • HLM says:

Yes. Stunningly stooopid. Every one of us is now dumber for having witnessed it.

  • Barbara says:

I resent the implication that Hawaiian’s are drug user. Not in defense of Obama, but in defense of Hawaii and Hawaiian’s.

  • NBachers says:

Yes, it’s quite a “cunning stunt” isn’t it? Wait ’till she tears into Joe Biden during the VP debates. He’ll sure wish he stayed home!

  • nightstar says:

Hold up. No where did Palin deny use of the “more powerful, mind-altering” hoo-doo, that you *assume* young Hawaiian Obama has licked and snorted. Let us not be so quick to absolve her of all possible indiscretions and return her pure, viriginal perfection. And does it matter?

The fact that you think her legal use of marijuana is something to be forgiven is a wee pathetic. The larger issue is that we at least know what her stance ought to or might be on the Tenth Amendment and states’ rights . . . but to pretend that either Palin or Obama are saints (and that it matters and according to whose morality, please?) is *yawn*, booooring.

    Typical social conservative politicking.

  • Oh yeah. I’m definitely cringing at the hypocrisy. I like the boldness of McCain’s choice of Palin and that of the woman herself, but I’m still voting for Bob Barr, thank you very much!

Cannabis needs to be “Legalized”, not “Decriminalized”.
Medical Use is great, So is Religious Use; which needs to be accepted in this country as well.
I don’t see any Positive progress in this country if the republican Idiots hold onto the White House. They are driven by Greed, abuse of power, and Constitutional Rights!
(not to mention the “one track mind”. AKA: “OIL”).

Bad choice all the way around.

    Ahhhh, Where is the experience?
She barely has any as a Mother, as her children are still quite young and she is nowhere near the point of learning those age old lessons in that season of life.
Let alone be a candidate for the VP of the USA.
She DOES NOT have the experience.
Just because you have the title of governor, does not mean one is qualified.
Population of 670,000. PLEASE. for 2 years?

So basically Palin does not get the magnitude of her responsibilities.
Those involved in being a GOOD wife, and mother.
Being a mother is the highest order, and should be taken seriously.
If they take their position seriously, they are far above rubies.

Not half hearted, like the many who try to spilt themselves in two, but ALWAYS later finding out IT IS IMPOSSIBLE.
    One WILL always suffer, Always.
I am reminder of the scripture in matthew 6:24 when Jesus said
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

I believe it is this mentality which is at the core of many divorces today and through out the last 35 years.
Women rebelling, and coming against their husbands because of peer pressure and not a strong walk with God. Turning selfish for their own glory.

God ordained the woman to be the man’s help mate, and if not barren to have the children, nurturing & teaching them.
Later after they are grown, work outside of the home.

And because God did not design man NOR woman to do both jobs at the same time, period.
To be effective in any work, it takes undivided attention.
    One will always suffer.
You can look through the ages, and corporate America.
Women’s libbers will yap at this but that is their problem.
They rebel against the natural order of things, and God.

  • It’s time for a change and Governor Sarah Palin will shake up Washington. Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.

Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us — Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.

In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the “bridge to nowhere” that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

As the head of Alaska’s National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.

Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

All of you cultist Repubs are DELUSIONAL if you think Palin is a good choice, or that McCain’s judgment is sound. He’s having a senior moment, that’s obvious. For 3 solid months or more, McCain talked about Obama’s inexperience, parroting what some of the primary campaign opponents said about him. Now McCain selects someone LESS experienced that Obama? It’s laughable, really. Just because you parade your stupidity out in public, doesn’t mean the public will think you or your positions are smart. The thing about the emperor’s new clothes was that he wasn’t wearing any. McCain has shot himself and the GOP in the foot. Unfortunately, for them and the unabashed supporters here on this blog, the wound is gangrenous.

    Bwahahahaha again!

Jim, I don’t know what you’re smoking but it has clearly made you delusional.

  • Oldski says:

I think this whole marijuana kerfuffle is just a smokescreen to obscure something really big, like maybe she enjoys baking cookies in her off-time. You know, like all good republican wives used to do. That kind of revelation would put a stop to all this change talk from both sides. (Smokescreen; SPARK. Get it, people? Lighten-up with your own bad selves.)

  • Rod says:

So what, who hasn’t smoked at this point?

Also, everyone’s giving kudos to Obama for taking the high road on this teen pregnancy mess, but you can be sure the Democratic machine will be digging up more dirt on Palin.

They already cooked up fake “scandals” as to how she got her ex-bro in law fired, how her husband had a DUI, how her daughter is pregnant and how it might be her husband’s child.

Obama doesn’t have to do anything, his left wing machine can do it for him!

  • Ingram says:

I’m imagining Sara Palin, age 43 as our next president as let’s face it, McCain’s no spring chicken.

    Pot smoker.
    Unwed and pregnant teen daughter.
    No foreign policy experience.
Four years city council as a member of a party that professes that Alaska should secede from the union.
Switches parties and presides for six years as mayor during which time she fired a police chief for “not supporting her administration” (not for failure to perform his duties mind you). He was fired for political considerations. DOJ firings of US attorneys ring a bell?
One and a half years experience as a governor of one of the least populated states in the union.

Due to her extreme lack of national and world level political experience she has no real capacity to exercise good judgment as executive in chief. Assuming she is smart enough to look for help in that arena, who then will help her make the tough decisions? Consensus of the White House staff? Do you imagine that she would ask the advice of (remember Palin’s president in this scenario) VP Pelosi or following her, Robert Byrd? Given her previous track record, I’m doubtful.
In essence it is obvious that this person is TOTALLY unqualified to hold higher office and her nomination is representative of the imperial and isolationist thought process that have contributed to systemic governmental indifference and incompetence through political party nepotism as opposed to real experience and capability.

If you thought the last eight years was fun, just wait until this eye candy get’s into office.

  • Catfish says:

Ingram said: “Do you imagine that she would ask the advice of (remember Palin’s president in this scenario) VP Pelosi or following her, Robert Byrd? Given her previous track record, I’m doubtful” I hope she never would ask for their advise. Robert Byrd, a former Klu Klux Klan leader, is not one to take advise from, nor or politicians who meet with current enemies of the U.S. with the consent of the State Dept. or the President!

  • Catfish says:

I meant without the consent of the State Dept. or President. I was referring to the Pelosi visit to Syria on her own.

  • THEOC says:

I love her! I think she’s new and fresh! And Hot!

Who cares, if she smoked Pot, long ago. And regarding the daughter, being prego! Like that was her fault, come on people, you’re smarter then at!

All you kool aid drinkers, are just trying to find anything on her… wait til she tears into Joe Biden - it’s going to be laughable!

Oh, yeah, O.B. cheats on his wife in the past, should we hold that agaist him as well..

    Give me a break!

  • Thinker says:

McCain is aligning with Palin for one reason and one reason only. Oil. Palin has the political clout in Alaska to get drilling in ANWAR approved. It’s not a coincidence that she’s “fresh”, young and female. That’s just a cheap political ploy. The real motivation is OIL.

  • Canni Bus says:

I think if we all just smoked a joint a day the world would be a much peaceful place. No more wars and fighting. They have still yet to find evidence that any one has died over the use of cannibus. Government can’t tax it so therefore it’s ILLEGAL. Alcohol and cigarettes are much more dangerous that marijuana will ever be. Our world is so backwards

  • John Benjamin says:

Seems like a real nice gal. The fact that she has admitted to smoking pot makes me like her slightly more. I quite frankly wouldn’t trust anyone between the ages of 40-60 that said that they had not tried pot. Vice President material- no way, her and her grandfather are a scary duo. Did you see her with Charlie Gibson, man that was really scary. Did anyone else notice that she couldn’t quite answer questions directly? At least seasoned politicians that can’t answer the question can at least B.S. on a much more polished level. Once again seems like a real nice lady but come on!!!

  • Joe says:

From a stance of a person who wont be taking part in this Election. All I can really say is that, Even though she has smoked Pot, so what… Obama said he Inhaled ” frequently ” - But I dont think this is the Important question here… Here we have 2 different people, Obama Pushing towards the Legalization of ” Medical Marijuana ” - While here in California that is already legal. Sarah Palin is against it, and so is McCain. But now think of this… She once thought it was right that she made the choice of Smoking Cannabis. Now she switches her stance on it, so where would she be ” IF SHE ” was 1 of those Regular People Prosecuted by the Federal Court System? Thousands of people get prosecuted and jailed because of this. We choose our Medicines and what goes into our bodies, We chose to make Alcohol Legal.. Now it gets Taxed, Where does all that money go? Why not Tax a Medical Product that is Distributed through Dispensaries to Qualified Patients? Do they not see the Revenue? I’ll tell you why this isn’t happening… Corporations & Money Loss do to Patients being Able to supply their Medication from Local instead of Commercial Super Giants. I simply try and look at both sides of the coins.

  • Ingram says:

I’d like to be clear, I don’t give two shakes for either current presidential candidate.

I think one is an elitist and out of touch and the other inexperienced and not independent enough and both of them are in the pockets of the banking industry like pretty much every other politico these days.

    That said…..

There’s a big whoop tee-do about sexism and Sara Palin although I didn’t hear so much whining when Hillary Clinton was getting reamed. So I have further watched for her “professional” credentials and capabilities to be outlined so that I could address that in lieu of personal issues even though those don’t seem to be problematic when it comes to opponents of the right.

Bless her moronic heart, Sara Palin stutters and is caught flat footed every single time her handlers allow her to have any time with the press. It’s no wonder that they are keeping her incommunicado.

Let’s first touch on the Katie Couric interview shall we?

Couric inquired about the recent financial contribution of the mortgage giant Fannie Mae to their campaign and if that presented a conflict of interest being that the CEO of John McCain’s election campaign is lobbyist and former Fannie Mae executive, Rick Davis and Palin suggested he was not benefiting directly. Okay, so Couric presses a bit and ask that since Mr. Davis still has a stake in the company, doesn’t that constitute a conflict of interest? Palin really struggled here & then just repeated her previous inane assertion and rather than stating definitively one way or the other, she “hoped” that there is no conflict of interest. She then goes on to expound upon the undue influence of lobbyist in public policy decisions. That was a big no go.

The current economic “bankers” crisis is directly due to deregulation and the laissez faire attitude of the Bush administration and John McCain is on record as a proponent of the exact same policies. When Palin was asked about the polling variables between the candidates as related to the current economic situation she asserts that McCain’s track records are what are going to impress Americans. Well, I’m an American & I see McCain’s track record taking us right to where we are.

When given an example of McCain’s inclination to support regulation of Fannie & Freddie, Palin was asked for another example. Any example will do, from McCain’s two and a half decades in office but sadly, she had no clue. She simply latched on to the cited example and then when pressed say’s I’ll try to find you some & I’ll bring em to ya . Good god. Really? A vice president?

    Charlie Gibson interviews Sara Palin,
Ok, the richest fodder for this poster is the Bush Doctrine question but she just makes it so easy!

Our nation is in the midst of two active wars and facing imminent threat from myriad’s of other hostile states. It’s not a mental stretch to understand that as an extension of the neocon offensive defense posture that the US has the right to exercise preemptive military action in self defense of a perceived threat.

But the vice presidential candidate, has no clue whatsoever what that means.

There is something to be said for being a politician outside of the beltway certainly, but I don’t think I’m out of line for having some expectation that my vice president and potential president be slightly educated in the ways of the world. Particularly while we are currently fighting on two fronts and she casually suggest that we should go to war with Russia over an incident that the US instigated.

So, avoiding the personal issues and focusing on her public presence, her political assertions are moronic and simple minded.
I still assert, she is totally unqualified to hold the position of vice president and should go back to Podunk for a couple of decades and get a clue.

In the midst of our financial crisis, we are wasting hundreds of billions of dollars on this rediculous drug war that is a complete failure. Besides, everyone, including our children, knows cannabis is safer thank alcohol. This hypocrisy and this drug war are bad for our children.

Now, the same governor who vetoed hemp for California is asking Washington for a 7 billion dollar handout. If Hemp were grown in Ca., we could generate billions in revenues with a crop that has numerous benefits and causes harm to nobody. Plus, Gov. Schwarzeneger, wants to rent prison space in other states at an unknown cost to the taxpayers. We need to let all non-violent drug offenders out of jail and save additional billions. Enough is enough!

    This whole farce must stop!
