Affecting video from Michigan medical marijuana campaign

October 30th, 2008, 12:20 am · 2 Comments · posted by by Alan Bock, Register editorial writer

Here is a video by a medical doctor whose wife contracted cancer, prepared for the Proposal 1 campaign in Michigan, which would allow patients with a physician’s recommendation to use marijuana medicinally. It’s a few minutes long, but it conveys information that simply can’t be conveyed in a 30-second spot. Please take a few minutes to look at it and see if you come away unaffected. It makes me angrier than ever at John Walters, the “drug czar,” who keeps repeating the absolute lie that there are no valid medicinal uses for marijuana — or even smoked marijuana if you want to narrow it down. There are, and clinging to the religion of prohibitionism causes thousands of people to suffer needlessly.

Well, Alan. You write for a well respected newspaper and it is an election season when we have an opportunity to raise issues and put some pressure on the politicians to enact common sense reforms.

And yet, I don’t think this issue has ever been raised. I am a daily reader of the paper and I don’t recall any discussion of the candidates’ positions on issues like this one. I saw where Martin Wisckol remarkably had some coverage of the congressional races. But wouldn’t you know, he omitted covering 48th Congressional candidate Don Patterson who I believe supports the medical marijuana issue. Have you written a single word about Don’s campaign?

While people like the good Doctor’s wife suffered, there were people undertaking their duty as citizens to run for office and try to enact change. The Register staff on the other hand did nothing.

The election is Tuesday. It is not too late for the Register to step up to the plate and fullfill its role in the election process.
