Political roadblocks to school data in California

November 19th, 2008, 12:22 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Steven Greenhut

Writer RiShawn Biddle has penned a chapter in a new book dealing with education reform in California.

This is his press statement:

“These days, California’s state officials can’t seem to get anything right. This is especially true when it comes to meeting the school data requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act — and ultimately, providing teachers, parents and state officials with the information on student, teacher and school performance needed to make intelligent decisions.

“California officials have spent more than a decade (and millions of dollars) developing a comprehensive, longitudinal school data system that also integrates systems at the K-12 and college levels. But an array of political roadblocks — along with the state’s bureaucratic morass — has slowed progress to a crawl. So education consumers still don’t have much-needed school data and can’t access what is available in a useful manner.

“For education reformers and officials in other states – many of which are facing similar problems – California offers lessons on how not to improve school data.”
