US invades Somalia

September 14th, 2009, 4:16 pm · 7 Comments · posted by by Alan Bock, Register editorial writer

Information is still sketchy, but the US military has confirmed that Special Forces invaded Somalia, a little village near the town of Barawe. The operation was secret and there’s no news yet on just how extensive it was. Speculation is that it has more to do with concern about al-Qaida establishing a foothold than with an effort to squelch Somali pirates.

If this is a small-scale operation designed to kill and/or neutralize militants, it may not do too much harm and might even be marginally useful. If it presages a more extensive US invasion and/or occupation, it will probably do more to improve al-Qaida recruiting than to harm its operations. At any rate, this kind of willingness to invade countries willy-nilly is more indicative of an empire than a republic, and a change in parties in power in Babylon-on-the-Potomac doesn’t seem to change things much.

I have always been impressed with the Great Ceasar. When his ransom by pirates was complete, he hired his own boats and went back an crusified them all. That was done during the Republic. We need to grant letters of mark and reprisal to private citizens to deal with these pirates in my humple opinion.

Roads, clean water, peace and prosperity. And you only had to work two days a year to pay your taxes. The Great Ceasar is looking pretty good these days.

We can only hope that these operations will remain “small scale” and that they will only be used to “neutralize militants.” I think that the US military’s priority should be to keep the militants and al-Queda off balance and in fear. This is perhaps the best way to fight the war on terror and it might be better employed in Afghanistan as a type of strategy as well.

I don’t see that Afghanistan is coming together as a cohesive nation and it would be hard to maintain one if that is the reason for the current build up of U.S forces over there.

Oh, come on. We had to do something!

If they go in, kick some you-know-what, clean out the rat’s nest and get out, then it will probably be very effective.

If we had done this decades ago in Afghanistan, and if Bush Senior had finished the job in Desert Storm, we wouldn’t be where we are now.

If Prez Clinton finished the job in Somolia, then perhaps it would not be a problem (Somolia pirates). …the same for the U.N.

  • Johnny Vegas says:

I have not heard a thing about this in the mainstream media…………

      Little wonder…….

“Mainstream” as a noun is beginning to be a joke.
The “cable channels” and Internet are killing the “MSM” in ratings.

You just picked up on another story that perhaps President Obama doesn’t want to have to explain.
Kinda like why don’t the health care Bills offically exclude illegal aliens?

George Bush would have been heralded as an Imperialist war monger cowboy out to police the world and make his friends rich with defense contracts if this was done on his second term.

Is the msm in the tank for their favorite causes and people? Say isn’t so Joe.
