Aren’t those government job numbers (too) amazing?

We’re old enough to recall the first time a widely acknowledged “credibility gap” developed thanks to an incredible (or is it uncredible) president. Now come these marvelous job numbers from the White House. Or perhaps not so marvelous.

“A Colorado company said it created 4,231 jobs with teh help of President Barack Obama’s economic recovery plan. The real number: fewer than 1,000.”

And so it goes with example after example, according to an Associated Press story in today’s paper.

“The government has overstated by thousands the numbers of jobs it has created or saved with federal contracts under the $787 billion recovery program,” says the AP.

We’re shocked. Yeah, you’re right. We’re not really shocked.

Then there’s the whole thing about this: “…jobs it has created or saved

Give that a little thought. How exactly does one prove a job has been “saved” by the federal government throwing money at companies? If you have a job today and the government gives your company money tomorrow and the next day you still have a job, was your job saved by the government?

Who does that math? Who does that accounting? If they can’t even accurately account for new jobs “created,” how on earth can they tally already existing jobs allegedly “saved?” Hm?

The ARRA money that went out to businesses that set by the previous administation went out fast and with no accountability. For the rest of us who receive ARRA in nonprofit sector, we have a contract over 50 pages long and constant monitoring by GAO office. We needed to conduct a risk assessment. We need prior approval for purchases over $500. So, our ARRA funds took a while to get out into the streets. However, we have created over 21 jobs. Ask B of A or AIG, how many jobs they created or did it go for corporate welfare to save Wall Street.
